While my “retirement” years are on the horizon, I’ll never stop writing. I simply enjoy the work I do and the people I work with too much. The people I work with are some of the most talented and creative people in the country; every day is fun, uplifting, and enjoyable. The clients I have do wonderful and amazing things. And while the work I have now is plenty, I’m always open to taking on an interesting writing assignment with a new organization.
I’ve been fortunate to write virtually every type of marketing, advertising, and training media—from brochures to videos—for companies as diverse as AT&T, Merrill Lynch, and Dell Computers; government agencies from FEMA to the CDC, and nonprofits including United Way and Catholic Charities USA.
I am currently a partner at The Dadoly Group, freelance writing (still and always), and working for non-profits as Virginia Nonprofit Strategic Outreach Services—a not-for-profit marketing agency that works for local non-profits for low or no cost. Next, I’m going to write a little fiction. (“It was a dark and stormy night…”)
While I’m down to seven guitars from an even dozen, I still try to fit a little music into every day—either writing, playing, composing, or just listening to some of my favorite bands. I have taken up the Ukulele; it travels well. Learning the piano is on my bucket list (there’s still plenty of time!)
Here are a few songs from what I like to think of as “The Dwight Album.”
Drawing and Painting
Charcoal is my preferred artistic medium, but I also enjoy playing with acrylics and even drawing with crayons. Drawing isn’t quite as relaxing as playing music. When you’re playing music and you make a mistake, you just start over. When drawing or painting, each mistake alters the trajectory of the project—or you throw it out and start again. I make a lot of mistakes, so we have a lot of recycling.
Love photography! Having a smartphone that is also a camera makes photography so easy and available, I rarely ever do it. I much prefer taking a real camera out into the world with the sole intention of taking photos. The results are much more creative and enjoyable. Photography is my favorite part of travel. Ireland is my favorite travel destination. But the best photos I’ve ever taken are the ones for Christmas cards showing Tom and Becky as they grew up.
