Your Message has an Unintended Audience


This should be obvious in a time of “leaked documents,” but anything you write may end up in front of someone other than your intended audience. Business communications are routinely read by employees and stockholders, your boss and senior management, your customers, and the press–even if that was not your intent.

Make sure your writing is clear, concise, and cannot be misunderstood.  You won’t always be present to explain what you meant to say—and once your document is released, you have lost the opportunity to clarify.
